What Is an MLS, and Why We Just Started Using One

What Is an MLS, and Why We Just Started Using One

If you've sold houses before you'll already know the term MLS — Multiple Listing Service. Estate agents have used them for decades: one listing, syndicated out to dozens of sites and every other agent in the network, instead of re-typing the same details fifteen times. The yachting world has been slower to catch up, but it's finally getting there, and we've just plugged CatamaransForSale.net into one.

I want to explain what that actually means, because “MLS” gets thrown around a lot in brokerage circles and I don't think most sellers — or even a fair few brokers — really know what it does day to day.

    What an MLS Actually Does

At its simplest: an MLS is a hub that sits between a broker and every website they want their listings to appear on. You update the boat once — new price, new photos, sold, whatever — in one place, and that update ripples out automatically to every connected site.

Before this existed, if you were a broker with a boat listed on five sites, you had five separate logins, five separate places to re-type the description, and five separate places you'd forget to update when the price changed. I've lived that. It's tedious, and it's exactly the kind of thing that leads to a buyer finding a boat “for sale” three weeks after it's actually sold, because nobody remembered to pull it off every site.

    The One We're Using: EasyMLS

We've just integrated with EasyMLS, and CatamaransForSale.net is now one of the sites their brokers can distribute to.

Here's the mechanics, for anyone technically minded (or just nosy, like me):

    • A broker manages everything from their EasyMLS account — price, description, photos, all of it — exactly as they always have.
    • The moment they make a change, it's reflected in their feed instantly.
    • Our site pulls that feed automatically every night and updates the listing on our end — new price, new photos, new description, all synced within seconds of us pulling it. If a boat comes off the EasyMLS feed because it's sold, it gets archived here too, automatically.
    • The broker never has to touch our site at all. One login, one place to manage the boat, and it shows up correctly everywhere they've chosen to distribute it.

For sellers working with a broker on EasyMLS, this means your boat can appear on CatamaransForSale.net without your broker doing a single extra minute of admin — and it means the listing you see is genuinely current, not something that was accurate six weeks ago and never touched since.

Why This Matters for a Niche Like Ours

Most of the big MLS networks are built for the whole yachting market — monohulls, motor yachts, everything. We only care about multihulls, so a feed like this only earns its place if it's actually filtered to catamarans and trimarans, sail and power. Ours is — EasyMLS built that filtering in specifically so a broker who also happens to sell monohulls doesn't accidentally flood our site with boats we don't cover.

That specialisation is really the whole point of CatamaransForSale.net. We'd rather be the best place on the internet to find a multihull than a smaller slice of somewhere that's trying to be everything to everyone.

If You're a Broker Reading This

If you're already on EasyMLS, you can select CatamaransForSale.net as one of your distribution targets — first three months are free, starting from the day your first boat goes live with us, so you can see real results before deciding whether it's worth paying for.

If you're not on EasyMLS yet and you're tired of updating five different sites by hand every time a price changes, it's worth a look regardless of whether you send your listings our way — that's your call, not ours to make for you.

What happens once your free trial ends? You move onto one of our normal broker plans — nothing sneaky, no surprise renewal. There's a genuinely free tier too if you just want to test the water: up to 3 listings, visible forever, no card required. Beyond that, plans start at €29/month for 5 active listings, up to unlimited listings on our top tier — every paid plan gets a branded broker profile page, auto-verified listings (no waiting in a review queue), and priority support. Take a look at the full breakdown here.

Either way, if you've got questions about how the feed works on our end, get in touch and I'll do my best to answer them!
